Che Kiho Visiting scolar of Gaya University

I am now 88 year old. I was born in 1923.
I'd like to tell you what it had been in those days.
I'd like to tell you the truth for its sake, neither for Korea nor for Japan.
I need the extreme determination. I must be ready to die.
But it is my mission to speak up here.

I used to live in Seoul. On and off I visited Pyongyang and Tokyo.
In those days Korean people were more Japanese than Japanese.
The Korean leaders have induced Korean people to be anti-Japanese
to do away with the impression that Japanese have been kind and
tender-hearted.

Comparing what Korea and Japan tell their children about their
histories, I see 10% distortion in Japanese history education and
90% in Korean one. In Korea children are not informed of
the political corruption in the last days of the last Dynasty;
they use history to instill the idea that Korea could have been
free from China, if there had been no intervention by the Japanese.
The Annexation of Korea by Japan paved the way to have Korean
people education, medicines, industries and social infrastructure.
No one can deny that Korea had her modern foundation of state
because of the annexation.
I feel it absurd of the Koreans who denounce what the annexation
has done and say "It has been the product of the Japanese Imperialism!"

The last Korean dynasty kept Korean industry stillborn.
It killed the progressive thinkers who tried to promote modernization.
Their relatives were murdered as well.
Korean people shout "Damned are molestation and sex slavery
by the Japanese imperialists!" but I don't believe in them.
I know the truth in history.
In Korea it was the hell or "kiun" in Hangul after the last Korean Dynasty ended.
In 1904 Japan decided to save the devastating state of Korea by financial aids.
For example the Dynasty's income was 7480000yen, but it spent over
30000000yen. The imbalance was supplied by Japan. In 1908 the Royal household
spent as much as 31000000yen.

I am now 88 years old. This is my outcry from my heart.

You can have the message of this visiting professor in Korean as well.
You can watch the video showing how Koreans and Japanese had lived
in 1937. Korean women volunteered to make one thousand stiches,
which were supposed to protect a soldier from being hurt.
The soldiers were to go to China.
When Tungchow Incident took place in 1937, Korean people came to
know about the killing and raping of the Japanese by the Chinese.
After I finished translating the Japanese text into English,
I've found the video in English.

Ahn Jung-geun's Son

d0112879_12284267.jpg
Seated are son of Ahn Jung-geun and son of Itoh Hirobumi
in one of the rooms of Chosun Hotel.
Ahn Jung-geun’s son came to see Itoh’s son after visiting
Prince Itoh Memorial Temple, which was built in 1932.
The former said, “I’ll bear the sin of my later father and
do my best to repay what I owe.”
This photo dates back to the 16th October in 1939.

d0112879_1346928.jpg
Yesterday in Seoul, the Korean team lost the soccer match
and the Japanese team won.
Some Koreans hang the banner of An Jung-geun
and also the text banner in Hangul “The race
unmindful of its history will have no future.”

At school I read in my history text book that
An Jung-geun assassinated Itoh Hirobumi.
When you look into the matter, the assassination
looks like that of Oswald shooting JFK.
An Jung-geun had a Browing, while the bullet
that killed Itoh was Carbine’s.
The bullet hit Itoh flew from upper right direction
toward down left direction. This was impossible
for An Jung-geun to try where he was unless he
was endowed with ambidexterity.

James E. Auer

James E. Auer is an American expertizing international relationships.
He has just visited Seoul, Korea and made comments on Korea
and Japan.

"What can Japanese do for the Koreans to improve their attitude
towards Japan? Born in Seoul, my former student was back to Korea
and has lived over 20 years since he graduated from Vanderbilt University.
He said Japan has to wait until Koreans overcome the inferiority complex."

"Though Japanese never mention this, but in 1895 Japan won
the First Sino-Japanese War and in 1905 the Russo-Japanese War.
The reason Japan had to struggle to win the two wars must have been
the same. Korean people have to take this into consideration.
Japan had never been anti-Korean but afraid that Korea would be occupied
by China or Russia. If China had won, Korea would have belonged to China.
If Russia had won, Korea would have been Russian territory.
In both cases Korea had never seen a democratic country with its free
market economy. The Japanese victories have made Korea a country of
democracy with economy of free market."

Filmmaker Linda Hoaglund

Last year I jumped into a haiku about Hiroshim bombing;

To me this was haiku, but the American guy, who was an editor
boating his knowledge of haiku, said this was a senryu.
We had a heated argument and all of a sudden the American
editor said that he had never said that senryu had to be humourous.
He blocked me and I haven't seen his posts ever since, though
he has been around there, for I saw his name referred to.

The man who wrote the haiku tried to console me.
He wrote he could have told the editor that it was a haiku, et., etc.
He was vacillating in his position.
He ran a martial arts school.
I had got a poor impression of him, feeling him wishy washy.

Also he told me how he had studied haiku.
Maybe he just wanted to boast himself and of his improvement.

I got a little mad at him, thinking that being humble is more
appreciated than his knowldge and craftmanship of haiku.
Above all I was upset that they fixed Hiroshima had got only summer
for and as its seasonal reference.

This morning I ran into Linda Hoaglund's personal statements.
They melted the anger I had hovered for a year.

I'd like to have excerpts here from The Japan Times.

Hoaglund’s reverence for katami is what led her to film
“Things Left Behind,” which was made in collaboration
with photographer Miyako Ishiuchi, whose work is
a gathering of objects that belonged to Hiroshima victims,
silent testimonials to lives erased from the face of the Earth
on Aug. 6, 1945

“Objectivity is overrated,” she says. “I’m interested in art
that engages with life and death.”

“I think rationalization and justification is the central myth
in postwar America. They invented the bomb because
they were afraid the Nazis were going to beat them to it.
And they dropped it on Japan because otherwise the war
would drag on. People really believe that crap.
They (the Americans) haven’t moved on in the sense that
they are the glorious victors. WWII was the last time
they won a war and came out like heroes and they can’t
forget that.”

According to Hoaglund, “Things Left Behind” is her way of
“combatting a myth. I want to confront the myth of Hiroshima
with my own subjectivity.” She can look back through time and
see her 10-year-old self, the only blonde girl in a classroom
full of Japanese, and feel the walls closing in all around her
as the teacher writes those two words on the blackboard.

Sakurai with three Korean professors expertising on comfort women.

Sakurai says that regarding the issue one has to recognize the
incommensurability of historical views between those who insist
on enforcement and those who demand evidence of it.

Sakurai Yoshiko is a Japanese journalist who has done
a lot of research on comfort women issue, visiting US and Korea.
It has been crucial to have an evidence of enforcement.
So far there has been no document to testify any enforcement.
The document in Washington shows the totally different images
of comfort women. In the case they had detected enforcement,
they executed the guilty. Here in the symposium with
the three Korean professors expertising on the issue, she refers to
the Kohno talk; the 16 Korean comfort women told about
their stories, but the details have never been revealed;
Kohno could not find any enforcement but some mental one;
the Korean government asked him to make an apology, saying
that they would not ask Japan for any compensation; Sakurai
asked Ishihara the Chief Cabinet Secretary if he had made it
documented. No, said Ishihara. ( In 2002 the Korean
Supreme Court issued the verdict that individual suit of
compensation by former comfort women would be legal.)
Yoshida who made up the enforcement of comfort women in
Jeju Island and how Yoshida was refuted; Yoshida said that
he had dragged 200 women; the Korean journalist there made
the survey and says that it would be impossible to take away
even 17 or 18 women. The MC asks what Korea wants from
Japan. Professor Chyon Jejun says they want sincere apology.
But one wonders “What is the use of making a sincere apology
when there has been no ground to to so? What is the use of it
when there is no truth in the claimed enforcement?”
Professor Chin Chans insists on the universal consensus of the issue,
basing human rights.
Sakurai says that regarding the issue one has to recognize the
incommensurability of historical views between those who insist
on enforcement and those who demand evidence of it.

Chopped up after raping the girl.

A Korean boy(19) raped a Korean girl(15),
killed her and butchered the body.
He sent out photos and messages.

He knew her; they went to a motel room;
he threatened her by a knife, molested her.

He was afraid of being notified to the police by her and
choked her to death.
He cut the body in the bathroom of the motel,
put the lumps into a plastic bag.
He brought the bag home.
Her family people asked the police to look for her.
The boy got scared and went to the police to tell
what he had done.

Click here to read this news in Japanese.

In Japan a 16-year-old high school girl killed her school mate and
abandond her in the woods. The culprit has a phone; it recorded
the message "We'll be also arrested!" So far the murderer has
not revealed the details.

VANK

VANK or BANK? You may ask yourself.
( If you click VANK, you can get the info in Japanese, which I copied
and pasted after the English text down below).

VANK is Voluntary Agency Network of Korea,
non profit organization, claiming to proliferate information
about Korea.
According to VANK, the group has 12000 members,
most of them are children under15.
They have access in a mass to targeted websites,
send mails in a mass after writing their political statements.

VANK has demanded National Geographic, Google Earth,
Mapple(Japanese map maker) to change “Sea of Japan”
into “ East Sea,” “Takeshima Island” into “Dokdo.”
VANK has made it and is specially awarded the Presidential
Award by Korean government.
When you check with “takeshima.com” it is transferred to VANK site?!

It was May 31st in 2006 when there occurred more than
100 times of access than usual to the website of Shimane Prefecture,
where Takeshima Island belongs.
In a mass sent in the mails in Hangul saying “Dokdo is Korean territory.”

This makes them look like a cyber-terrorist group of people.
What they’ve done to Japan make them cyberstalkers.

Voluntary Agency Network of Korea

National GeographicやGoogle Earth、
